Licence renewal
SIA Licence Renewal
What Door Supervisors and Security Officers need to do before renewing, including the mandatory refresher training that replaced the old top-up qualification.
From top-up to refresher training
In 2021 the SIA introduced top-up training for Door Supervisors and Security Guards renewing their licence, bringing everyone up to the same standard as new licence holders. The SIA no longer accepts top-up qualifications.
Since 1 April 2025, Door Supervisors and Security Guards must complete an accredited refresher qualification to renew their licence. It refreshes safety-critical skills and covers up-to-date content on spiking and terror threat awareness.
What the Door Supervisor refresher covers
- Conducting searches
- Physical intervention
- Protecting people in vulnerable situations, including spiking awareness
- Terror threat awareness
The Security Officer refresher covers the equivalent safety-critical skills for guarding roles.
How to renew your licence
- 1Complete the refresher course for your licence type before you apply to renew.
- 2Hold a current Emergency First Aid at Work (or equivalent) certificate.
- 3Apply to renew online with the SIA before your current licence expires.
- 4The SIA re-checks your identity and criminal record before issuing your new 3-year licence.
Always check the latest requirements on the official SIA renewal guidance.
